Frequently Asked Questions About Full Dentures – Brightening Care

At Montefiore Medical Center, we are approached by many patients who are considering full dentures, or “complete dentures,” to replace an entire arch of teeth. Below are some of the more commonly asked questions about full or complete dentures that we often hear from potential patients:

How Long Do Full Dentures Typically Last?

Complete dentures usually last anywhere from five to eight years with proper care. However, they may need to be adjusted or replaced sooner due to changes in your jawbone shape or size.

What Is the Process for Getting Fitted for Full Dentures?

The process of getting fitted for full dentures includes a thorough examination by your dentist and having several impressions taken of the mouth and jaw area. These impressions will be used to create custom-fit dentures that are tailored specifically to fit your mouth. Additionally, you may also need to have some X-rays taken in order to ensure proper placement.

Can I Eat With Full Dentures?

Yes, you can eat with complete dentures. However, it is essential to remember that chewing may take longer than usual, and you should start out by eating softer foods and gradually work up to tougher items as your mouth adjusts. It is also recommended that you use both sides of the mouth when chewing in order to distribute pressure evenly on the dentures.

How Do I Care For Full Dentures?

Complete dentures require daily cleaning and proper maintenance to prevent damage or irritation. Be sure to remove them at night before sleeping and brush them gently with a soft toothbrush and mild soap or detergent-free cleanser. Additionally, soak them overnight in a denture cleanser solution to help remove any bacteria or plaque buildup. Lastly, it is important to make regular visits to the dentist for an evaluation and professional cleaning of your dentures.

Are Full Dentures Painful?

Initially, full dentures may cause some discomfort as your mouth adjusts to the new shape and size of them. However, over time any discomfort should subside as long as they are properly fitted and cared for. If there is still pain or irritation, be sure to contact your dentist right away.
